The Near and Dear: Ukrainian Architecture in Times of War

This exhibition features the project RE:Ukraine Villages of Kyiv-based architecture studio, Balbek Bureau. The project digitally preserves Ukrainian rural architecture in times of war.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, thousands of rural houses in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed. The RE:Ukraine Villages project aims to preserve the image of Ukrainian villages and make rural housing restoration more accessible.

During field trips the project’s team gathered features of rural houses from different regions in Ukraine. The findings and observations were compiled into an online constructor for configuring homes and generating blueprints.

The constructor is flexible and allows homeowners to choose the planning, the size of the house, and decorative facade elements according to their needs, preferences, and local customs. It’s free to use and helps homeowners make the necessary decisions and start rebuilding.
