Ljurhalla Factory, Dreem Architects, and Odlingsbolaget Svalan have each explored, in their own ways, the activation and care of unused spaces.
In this talk, led by journalist Lisa Stevik, we’ll learn more about the speakers’ respective projects — an abandoned factory in Vårgårda, a public suggestion mailbox, and a rooftop garden for biodiversity — and listen in on a conversation about sustainability, new methods, and creating value in overlooked places.
What distinguishes approaches to space in rural versus urban environments? What possibilities and challenges does each context present? And how can individual actors contribute to sustainable development?

Dreem Architects
During the summer of 2025, Dreem Architects installed a suggestion mailbox at the Röhsska Museum. The project ”What Do Gothenburgers Dream of for Their City?” investigated what happens when the city’s inhabitants are given a voice: Which places are overlooked? What is missing? What is appreciated?
Based on this collected material, a series of architectural proposals and visions — grounded in the ideas of Gothenburg’s residents — will be developed, offering a glimpse into what a citizen-driven city could look like.
Odlingsbolaget Svalan
Odlingsbolaget Svalan (a cultivation company) runs projects in both rural and urban areas, focusing on sustainable food production and biodiversity. Drawing on experiences and methods from the countryside, they see potential in urban farming to promote biodiversity and expand sustainable thinking in places that would otherwise go unused.
Ljurhalla Factory
Ljurhalla Factory is a non-profit organisation and cultural platform located outside of Vårgårda, northeast of Gothenburg. In 2021, artist Rachel Barron and designer Nathan Clydesdale took over the long-abandoned factory, originally built in 1930. Since then, they have been working to transform the space into a vibrant hub for collaboration, artistic practice, community, and exchange.
