Join us for a talk in the exhibition Asplund and the Courthouse where British designer Ilona Gaynor presents her practice and research on power structures, with a focus on courtrooms, how they are designed and their effects on those that find themselves in them. Although their approaches and purposes differ, Gaynor’s speculative design practice is relevant in relation to the humanistic approach that architect Gunnar Asplund used for the commission that he undertook almost a century ago of the Gothenburg City Courthouse.

About
Ilona Gaynor is an experimental designer, artist and writer. Her design work focuses on examining procedures of power across a variety of fields, images and material forms. Her approach to design is to expand its scope by inhabiting and subverting its form, context, reading and strategy. Her work is included in several permanent collections and has been exhibited, screened, published and disseminated internationally, including at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Design Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Theaster Gates’ Black Cinema House, the HMKV and STUK.
Gaynor is Professor-in-Residence at the Rhode Island School of Design, USA.

Även om Gaynors tillvägagångssätt och syften skiljer sig åt, är Gaynors spekulativa designpraktik relevant i relation till det humanistiska förhållningssätt som arkitekten Gunnar Asplund använde för det uppdrag han åtog sig för nästan ett sekel sedan av Göteborgs rådhus.

Ilona Gaynor är en experimentell designer, konstnär och författare. Hennes designpraktik fokuserar på att undersöka maktprocesser över olika fält, bilder och materiella former. Hennes verk ingår i flera permanenta samlingar och har ställts ut och publicerats internationellt, bland annat på Palais de Tokyo i Paris, Designmuseet i London, Victoria and Albert Museum, Theaster Gates Black Cinema House, HMKV och STUK. Gaynor är professor i design vid Rhode Island School of Design, USA.
