What would the world look like if we followed craftsmanship principles instead of mass production? D20 explores this by contrasting a sustainable, craftsmanship-based future with the unsustainable industrial model, using AI and artisanal sketches to imagine such a world.
D20, a speculative project within the Horizon Europe research project Hephaestus, explores a utopia based on craftsmanship, where artists wonder what the world would look like if society were built on artisanal principles instead of industrial production. The project uses AI to imagine an alternative future where the relationship with resources and consumption resembles that of artisanal production.
Besides this AI-driven exploration, the project will also present a speculative exploration of a craftsmanship-based future through sketches by fourteen craftmakers from Dals Långed in Sweden, Bornholm in Denmark, Bassano del Grappa, and Venice in Italy.
