Borders, surveillance and technologies

Welcome to a workshop where we explore how borders, surveillance and new technologies are shaping Nordic openness.

The DiNoBord project explores the tensions between Nordic openness and security at the borders, focusing on digital surveillance. We investigate both the legal, public, and institutional discourse and how technologies such as biometric scanning, facial recognition, and automated border control gates are used in practice.

For a long time downplayed, Nordic borders have regained attention due to crises like the 2015 migration wave, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine, leading to increasing (digital) surveillance. What does a bridge do in making a border? Or a very long forest? Or an airport as a border area? How are these places and infrastructures watched, and how do they watch us crossing borders?

DiNoBord wants to bring attention to the material life of borders through a speculative workshop and a public talk at The Röhsska Museum.
