Arkitekturdagarna: War and Architecture

During Arkitekturdagarna 2025, the Ukrainian architecture studio Balbek Bureau presents RE:Ukraine Villages, a project that maps rural architecture and explores how architects can support communities in the preservation, reconstruction, and restoring homes destroyed by war. The project examines how cultural heritage, and identity can be protected amid widespread destruction.
In this panel discussion, we meet with the Ukrainian architecture studio Balbek Bureau and Feras Hammami, Associate Professor of Conservation at the University of Gothenburg, to reflect on architecture in times of war.
What role do buildings and other elements of the built environment play in shaping identity and cultural heritage? And what parallells and contrasts can be drawn between the situations in Ukraine, Palestine, and other parts of the world?
