Seminar Craft in a time of change: Intellectual property, form and AI
In this seminar, we discuss copyright issues that are relevant to craft and design in a time of change. As part of the toolbox of craftspeople and designers, we highlight valuable legal tools in a conversation with Copenhagen-based legal scholar Vishv Priya Kohli of Copenhagen Business School.
The conversation discusses what these translations make visible or invisible, how they register emotions, and what will come to be valued. Our experiments bring into sharp focus the question of what craft is and what it can be, as well as what it is that travels through time and space: is it the craft object or the movement? Ultimately, the encounter between hands and digital code raises questions about the heritage of craft and how it is carried forward over time.
Craft and design are grounded in tradition and professional skill, but today they are increasingly encountering digital tools such as AI. In this workshop, we explore how intellectual property (IP) can protect and strengthen creative work in a time of change. We discuss how AI affects design and documentation, what copyright, design protection, and geographical indications mean for craftspeople, and how museums and practitioners can collaborate on authenticity and recognition. Practical examples and dialogue between Vishv Priya Kohli, legal scholar and associate professor at Copenhagen Business School, and participating craftspeople.
