On 5 November, the documentary We Were Here – The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe will be screened at Bio Roy in a unique one-time event. Through artworks, historical documents and personal reflections, the film explores the presence of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe – a part of history that has rarely received the attention it deserves.
The screening will be followed by an open panel discussion moderated by Åsa Bharathi Larsson, art and media historian at Södertörn University, with artist Ikram Abdulkadir, Jonelle Twum from Black Archives, and the film’s director Fred Kudjo Kuwornu. Together, they will discuss which stories are represented in our museums, archives and history books – and which risk being left out.
The discussion will explore questions such as: Who gets to be seen in history? How do museums and archives shape our understanding of Europe? What happens when art and film bring stories that have long been overlooked into focus? And how can history help us understand experiences of identity, belonging and representation today?
The programme offers an opportunity to come together around history, culture and contemporary society from new perspectives.

Vid ett unikt tillfälle, den 5 november visas dokumentärfilmen We Were Here – The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe på Bio Roy. Genom konstverk, historiska dokument och personliga reflektioner berättar filmen om svarta afrikaners närvaro i renässansens Europa – en del av historien som sällan har uppmärksammats.
Efter filmen följer ett öppet panelsamtal med moderator Åsa Bharathi Larsson, konst- och mediehistoriker vid Södertörns högskola, samt konstnär Ikram Abdulkadir, Jonelle Twum från Black Archives och filmens regissör Fred Kudjo Kuwornu.
