Viola Gråsten

A pioneer in Swedish textile art.

Viola Gråsten was one of Sweden’s most influential textile artists during the mid-20th century. With her bold patterns and unconventional color combinations, she revolutionized the Swedish textile industry and created timeless works that are still loved by many today.

Gråsten was born in 1910 in Finland and grew up during a time of great upheaval. Her foster father, Ernst Gråsten, was Finland’s Minister of Finance, and her childhood was shaped by both culture and politics. From a young age, she showed a strong passion for art and design.

Viola Gråsten was a pioneer in Swedish textile art. By breaking conventions with her unique design language, she made a significant impact on Swedish design history. Her works are not only beautiful and timeless, but they also represent a time of optimism and innovation.

Gråsten studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki and later moved to Sweden. During the 1940s, she established herself as a prominent textile artist, particularly through her work at NK’s textile department. Her rya rugs, with their bold color combinations and long pile, garnered significant attention and broke the conventions of the time.

Vibrant forms from nature and geometry
