Just add play!

In the installation Remix – Just Add Play!, students from HDK-Valand have reimagined design classics with children in mind. Discover and try out ten playful prototypes – from SKF’s ball bearings to Gustavsberg’s porcelain stool from 1899.

As part of the Homo Ludens course, master’s students in the Child Culture Design program have each selected an object from the exhibition Design Stories. Under the theme Remix – Just Add Play!, they explored how to add play and playability to existing works with a focus on children. Some works stay close to the originals, while others take new and unexpected directions. The course also includes exploring observation as a method, carried out in collaboration with preschool children.

Visitors are now invited to see and test the students’ playful remixed creations. The installation presents ten interactive prototypes aimed at children aged 3–5 years. Please note that some prototypes contain small loose parts, so accompanying adults need to supervise their children.

About the Program

The master’s program Child Culture Design is unique in its global focus on child perspectives and attracts students from around the world. Through an understanding of children’s culture, society’s view of children, and the importance of play, students develop their roles as designers. The program prepares students for both professional practice and research, offering specialist competence in play, children’s culture, and the participation of children and youth in society.
